I bought this for a scoped 03-a2 that needed a safety that could be used with a scope as the original part is too tall to easily flip on or off once a scope is mounted.
Out of the package the first thing I noticed was that the design used a little piece of nylon to hold the safety in the bolt shroud and provide the only tension to keep the safety in it's position. This struck me as something with the potential to wear out quickly but I decided to use it anyway. The casting of the metal showed some pretty substantial seams that wouldn't affect it working but look bad, so I had to spend time cleaning them up with a file.
When I tried to actually install the product into the bolt I found that the nylon tensioner needed to be significantly trimmed to actually clearance into the bolt. Once that was dealt with the bolt shroud required a notch be cut into it in order for the safety to be able to be lowered enough to engage.
I was putting in a Huber Concepts trigger at the same time, and once I had everything back together and was testing things before shooting it with actual ammo, the rifle had developed a pretty serious flaw: closing the bolt caused the gun to fire. Spent the next week trying to figure out what was wrong with the trigger.
Turned out it was the safety: I put the original factory one back on and the problem immediately stopped. I'd rather have a safety that's really hard to use than one which makes the gun go bang without my permission.
Mark II safety(2010-07-04)
I agree on the finish details but the safety will work OK if it is properly installed. It works the same as you would on a 98 Mauser. They must be timed with the sear or you will have a condition as you described.
Does not lock bolt(2013-08-08)
This safety uses the "bolt unlocked safety off" position and the "bolt unlocked safety on" positions. This "safety on" position relieves the spring pressure on the cocking piece and allows the bolt to open very easily. Place your safety on the center position and you can see how easy the bolt opens. When caring the rifle in the field with a sling the bolt falls open EVERY time.
Very surprised Brownell's even carries(2013-11-10)
It's been a long time since I bought one of these safety's. The quality has become very poor. There was no care taken to remove any casting marks or slag. The finish was absolutely horrible.
Good for the money(2017-03-27)
I recently installed 4 of these on some small ring commercial Husqvarna actions from the 30s and 40s. The bolt does lock down when the safety is engaged. Yes the finish is not the best but you will look long and hard to find a safety this inexpensive. Yes the good ol days are over but the do polish up easily. I prefer these over the Timney because there is no screw holding the 2 pieces together. That screw will go bye bye when you need it the most.
Slotting can be a problem(2009-11-16)
You need to slot the bolt sleeve for this safety to work. The problem comes from installing on M-96 Swedish Mausers which have very hard and brittle steel (high nickel content). After slotting (which is best done with a Dremmel cut-off wheel - most files will not cut the steel used on these guns), you will have a narrow ear left to hold the safety in place when the gun is cocked. It can break off allowing the safety to come back and keep the gun from functioning. Welding this ear back on and finishing is a chore. This may not be a problem on other small ring Mausers though. Safety works okay though.
Mark II Safety M98(2011-05-15)
I have installed several of these safetys now and find them to be reliable. I don't care for the trigger safety on custom sporters (I guess I am old school that Way). The most difficult part of the installation is of course the grinding of the shroud. I had mine done in only 20 minutes using a dremel and cut off wheel. The principal when grinding is slow and steady. Don't try to hog out the metal in one or two cuts. Take your time and FIT the safety to the shroud. As far as the teflon tension piece is concerened; it is the weak link with this safety. I have played with the idea of drilling out the teflon tension hole on the safety and trying out a spring and ball setup. When I do I will let you know. Finish is flat, something I wish they would make in a high polish blue. As far as a safety goes though, I like it. It is definately more fashionable than the timneys; which I have also installed and twisted the soft screw heads off of.
very good safety(2014-11-06)
works very well on the 93-96 Mauser action, you will need to fit this product, i used a dremell with a cutting wheel to cut the notch in the bolt shroud, remove bolt shroud and cocking piece, install safety in shroud and push as far as you can to the down or off position that is where you will need to cut a small notch, remove a small amount at a time, test the cocking piece in the shroud with safety in place (off ) position, then you can see how much more to remove so the handel on the safety is down as far as it needs to clea,r the cocking piece should go in and out with no effort, you may need to bevel the cocking to engage safety on, remember remove very little at a time look close how the safety works before you start
