True, match-spec bolt carriers increase cycling efficiency for greater dependability and less chance of malfunction. Machined to military specs, hardened and heat treated, then hard-chrome plated for a much lower co-efficient of friction between the upper receiver and carrier. Inside surfaces of bolt recess are polished and also hard-chromed for a better gas seal and less carbon build-up. Includes hard-chromed gas key and stainless steel screws.

No staking? Seriously? 2018-01-10
I bought this "match grade" bolt carrier seeking the best for my SPR. I really figured I would not have to inspect the part closely since it was from a reputable manufacturer. After firing about 500 rounds, the rifle began to fail feeding every time. The first tell tale signs were the bolt not locking back after the last shot. I thought it might have been my reloads, but they worked fine in another rifle, then I thought I misaligned the gas block. I should not have doubted myself. Upon disassembly I noticed the gas key was rattling and the screws were completely loose. These screws did look like they were staked but differently, which is why I did not notice this to begin with. Why did they not stake these at the factory? They were obviously going to come loose. So now I will need to pay a gunsmith to stake these, or spend even more money on a staking jig to make this part functional. Just spend the money on a bolt that has a staked gas key and save yourself the money and extra equipment. I seriously thought that a staked gas key was the industry standard since there really is no customizable method for this procedure.

The carrier I received was not made by DPMS, as some of the older Smith Enterprises carriers apparently were. It had the Smith Enterprise "SEI" markings on the left side of the carrier, in the usual spot, rather than the "D" marking of DPMS. This is a very high quality part, with no visible machine marks and a flawless application of hard chrome. The stainless steel carrier key screws are a nice touch. I literally could find no flaws, and I looked closely. The one big issue with these carriers is that Smith still refuses to stake their carrier keys, for whatever reason. Staking is an important step, since the screws will eventually loosen without it, causing the rifle to malfunction. That is why I gave this carrier 4 stars instead of 5. This bolt carrier deserves a quality, factory staking job, as is found on Colt carriers. Hey Smith Enterprises, do that and you'll have a real winner with this one.
