Buyer Beware...(2018-01-24)
I wanted to replace the factory white dot sight on a new Beretta APX, I decided to only replace the front sight with an ameriglo night sight (the one that is sold by Beretta for the APX). Was very excited to see that wheeler had made this sight tool that was more affordable than some others. I purchased this sight tool and made sure to read the directions very carefully before even taking it out of the box. I then proceeded to set up my Beretta slide in the sight tool while reading the instructions step by step to make sure that I would not damage either the slide or the sight. In removing the factory front sight the sight tool would not preform the task unaided I had to use a punch and a hammer on the tool (which was ok in the instructions to do) to break the factory front sight loose and once it came loose was able to remove it with no problem. Now installing the new front sight is where I was very disappointed. I got the sight tool readjusted to install rather then to remove and lined up the new sight and began to install it but while I was pushing with the tool I could tell that it was bending the front sight. I used a brass punch to try and bend it back into place and get it started a bit more into the notch but to no avail. I tried again to push it with the sight tool and it just continued to bend the sight. Needless to say I am very disappointed and upset with this tool. I will try and contact them to see if there was any user error on my part, but as I stated earlier I was very careful to follow all the instructions that were provided by wheeler in relation to this tool. Looking forward to getting my money back on this one.
Just like Dan the Man, my experience was the same, it barely worked to get the front sight off the gun, then it started feeding it in incorrectly, started bending the front sight, left marks all over the gun. I read over the instructions but nothing really for this situation, it's kind of funny because both recent reviews had the exact same experience.
It completely broke the front sight of my P229, left me with nothing but a mess and I'm now out 129.99? I feel absolutely taken. I didn't get anything done, and now just have new marks on all the pistols I used it on....
Thanks Wheeler Engineering! I really needed a broken P229 front sight!
Well built and Versatile for a universal(2018-02-01)
I am an armorer and change out sights. I prefer dedicated tools and have several MGW tools for Glock and Sig. I don't do enough to justify buying the MGW universal tool with the inserts. I have used this on several Sig front and rear sights (P320s so I could not use my traditional series MGW tool). I had no issues. I just made double sure that I had everything perfectly aligned before I started.
The only issue was one of the thumbscrews was so tight I had to use pliers and lubricant to get it broken in. After that it was fine. I would have given it 4 stars if not for the tightness of the screw. It is well built unlike some of the sight pushers made by airsoft companies.
I would caution people that this is not a quick adjustment tool for the range. If you have it set up for your gun, fine. But it is really a workbench tool. If you are planning to do a lot of sights, you might want to look at the MGW as it is the gold standard.
Excellent tool!(2018-02-16)
Nothing satisfies quite like a quality tool and this is a glowing example. It's well designed and very solid. I was able to easily remove the OEM sights from my H&K P2000SK and install Meprolight night sights (ML-11519). I protected the contact points on the slide with painter's tape and made sure that the pusher block was as low as possible without scraping across the slide for best force application and to minimize unwanted torques. The removal and installation were straightforward and there was zero marring to the slide or sights. Excellent!
Works Great(2018-03-23)
So far it works with all handguns sights, front and rear. Used tool on Glock,Sig Sauer, H&K, S&W, Walther, Ruger and 1911 handguns and so far it has worked great.
Be careful(2018-04-09)
I wouldn't buy another one. Doesn't work well, more likely to break or bend a sight than to move it.
Works Great!(2018-06-14)
Keeping in mind this is a universal tool so you will need to read the instructions and properly setup your slide to adjust or install its sights. If you are bending or breaking front sight posts you do not have the tool setup correctly. Also if you are marring the finish on your gun then you don't have the height adjustment set correctly. Take your time and read the instructions. Most dovetail sights should be hand fitted first prior to installing. They should slide about halfway into the slot before you attempt to use the pusher. If it does not then use a honing stone and rub the bottom of the sight across the stone 4-5 times checking for fitment into the slide. Then use your properly configured sight tool. Tired of seeing folks dig on this tool, it's robust and well made and moves sights like it's working through butter. I had a stubborn front sight post on a Sig P229 and this tool probably adjusted removed the old post and installed new Sig Xray sights without issue. Granted it takes 5-10 minutes to setup your slide properly but then it does exactly as advertised. Also used on extremely stubborn Springfield XD and Glock sights. Works perfectly and with a sale price of 129 plus 10 bucks off and free shipping this is a better value than many cheaply made mid-tier sight pushes. A home run!
Wheeler Wrong engineered(2018-07-14)
1. The way the tool is made allows for leverage perpendicular misalignment to the side of the sight.
The tool is made so that when you tighten the pusher against the angled side of the sight on Glock suppressor sight, the angle on the sight forces the sight pusher up. The leverage created on the sights side angle is greater than the compression from the tool's upper half that is held down by two bolts, one on each side: but the bolts are approx 2.4 inches from the center of the pusher jaws, which is too far back from the sight's jaw center..
The pusher jaws for the Glock sights are angled along with the Glock's Suppressor sight being angled. The two angles do not match, and under a strong push, the pusher jaw slides up the sight, increasing the sight's face perpendicular differential, with the jaw, which allowed the jaw to miss-align and actually dent the sight's side angle, towards the front of the sight and on the other side when I tried to push the sight back about .020
The side pressure, on the sight's side angle, allows the top half of the tool to be pushed up, which increases the pressure needed to push the sight. It also miss-aligns the sight's mounting faces to the slide's sight cut faces.
2. When pushing the sight, the pusher screw, that pushes and pull the pusher jaws, slips and pops in the pusher jaw's threaded portion.
3. Note: I measured the distance between the top and bottom half of the tool with Digital Calipers, to make sure of top to bottom alignment. I also measured slide sides to tool faces on each side, to insure that the slide would be perpendicular to the tools base and jaws. I measured the top to bottom clearances when it was it was raised by the sight's angled side, but don't remember the amount that it actually separated further from the static measurements, so I do not want to put a false reading; but I do know it was substantial.
I would like it noted that I have various other Wheeler Tools and they perform well, and that is why I decided to purchase the sight tool, in spite of the negative reviews: Wrong decision!
The bolts that hold the top half to the bottom half of the tool, need to be moved to the other side of the pusher screw, which would put them closer to the pusher jaws and decrease the leverage and should alleviate the jaws' miss-alignment to the sight's faces.
I have attached pictures of the Sight's damage caused by the tool, which is negligible, but unnecessary if the too was engineered & made properly. The tool might work OK with straight up sight side faces, but NOT sights with angled sides. So I'm returning it, and would caution anyone pushing sight's like Trijicon's Glock Suppressor sights to be aware of incurring damage to the site.
The tool is very attractive and when you first look at it, it a piece to be hold: But remember "Looks aren't everything"!
It Works(2018-07-19)
has made sight installs easier than ever.
I've got pushers that range upward of $600.00 that won't do what this one will
Waste of money(2018-07-24)
The main problem with this product is the block that contacts the sight, twists as you tighten against the sight. You cannot tighten the block down enough to prevent it either. Setting the fixture up is also inaccurate to say the least. You can never place the slide in the same place and so you can never repeat the same movement of the sight. It is just not a well designed product for what you pay. About the best thing I can say is the finish is nice. Otherwise, save your money and buy the punch set offered by the same company.
